NATURAL HIGHS OF CHILL: CUT BACK ON CAFFEINE, SUGAR AND CIGARETTES: HOW TO QUIT
Changing any habit is stressful, so it's best not to quit everything in one go. A good strategy is to avoid something for a month and then see how you feel. (See our book Natural Highs for a step-by-step strategy for quitting smoking.) One way to greatly reduce the cravings for sugar and stimulants is to have an excellent diet, Keep your blood sugar level even by always having something substantial for breakfast, such as an oat-based breakfast cereal or unsweetened live yoghurt with banana, ground sesame seeds and wheatgerm, or an egg. Snack frequently on fresh fruit throughout the day. The worst thing you can do is go for hours without eating. Eating lots of fibre-rich, alkaline-forming fresh vegetables and fruit can help reduce cravings for stimulants.
Vitamins and minerals are important too because they help to regulate your blood sugar level, and hence your appetite. It's vital to eat the foods rich in these nutrients, such as fresh fruit and vegetables, but for maximum effect it's a good idea to supplement. We recommend a high-strength multivitamin plus 2000mg of vitamin Ñ and 200mcg of chromium per day
Maintaining your energy level is the key to stopping sugar and stimulants. This in turn allows you to avoid the anxiety, tension and stress of addictions and cravings, leaving you more relaxed, better able to cope with stress, and more able to enjoy life.
