FACTS ABOUT DEPRESSION: INCREASING NUMBERS OF YOUNG PEOPLE

Based on recent statistics, depression and a host of other psychological problems are extremely common in the United States, affecting large numbers of people at any given time. While some statistics indicate a rising incidence of depression among all age groups, the most alarming aspect of these numbers is that they are probably gross "underestimations" of the true problem. Many people suffer silently; others are totally unaware that their cynical, unhappy attitudes are really pan of a much greater problem. Consider the following:

  • The known suicide rate among 15- to 19-year-olds has more than doubled since 1950. In the United States, suicide rates are higher among whites than blacks, and higher among males than females. Rates for suicide among black women are very low.
  • Suicide rates among elementary school children and high school students and on college campuses have increased dramatically in the past decade, forcing educational institutions to take significant steps to improve counseling services, teach teachers to recognize and refer high-risk students, and include communities and families in suicide prevention and intervention programs.
  • Depression strikes over 17 million Americans each year, with less than half of those who suffer from it receiving the treatment they need.
  • Many of the drag and alcohol problems facing Americans have their roots in a hopeless, depressed psychological state in which victims turn to drugs to ease their suffering. In addition, many drugs cause victims to be depressed.
  • More than 80 percent of people with depression can be treated successfully with medication, therapy, or a combination of both; however, most people never seek treatment. / Nearly 20 percent of Americans will seek psychological help from trained professionals during their lifetimes. Many of those who seek help will be suffering from depression-related problems.
  • The risk of depression increases for those who have a parent or sibling who suffered from depression before age 30.
  • Suicide is one of the leading causes of death in the United States, and more than 40,000 depressed people in the United States kill themselves every year.
  • Antidepressant medications are among the most-prescribed drugs in the United States, with dramatic increases in the numbers of prescriptions filled and the length of time that patients are on these medications.
